Visa & ETA
Attending Oxbridge Summer Scholars is an exciting opportunity, and understanding the UK entry requirements is an essential part of your preparation. Depending on your nationality, you may need a UK Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This page provides accurate, official guidance to help you plan your application.
Please note that OSS is not responsible for visa or ETA applications, processing times, or outcomes. This page is intended for informational purposes only. You are responsible for submitting your application correctly and obtaining the necessary permission to travel.
UK Visa (Standard Visitor Visa)
For participants from countries that are not visa-exempt, a Standard Visitor Visa is required (check if you need a visa – https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa).
This visa is designed for short-term visits, such as attending summer courses, and allows stays of up to six months.
When applying, you will need:
- - A valid passport (valid for your entire stay, with at least one blank page).
- - A completed online application form via GOV.UK.
- - Supporting documents showing your reason for travel (e.g. OSS acceptance), proof of funds, travel/return plans, and ties to your home country.
- - Visa application fee (£127), paid online.

Applications should generally be submitted up to three months before travel, allowing sufficient time for processing, which can take several weeks.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
If you are from a visa-exempt country, you will instead need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
An ETA is a mandatory pre‑travel authorisation that you obtain before booking travel, and it must be linked to the passport you will travel with.
You generally need an ETA if:
- - You are from a visa‑exempt country, such as the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, most GCC nations, and EU countries.
- - You are coming to the UK for a visit of up to six months (tourism, business, short‑term study, permitted engagements).
- - You are not applying for a visa, and you do not already hold UK immigration permission.

Note: British and Irish citizens are not required to have an ETA.
ETA applications are submitted online via the UK Government website or
app. Processing is usually quick, often within minutes, but may take up to
three working days.
The application fee is £16, payable online. OSS recommends applying at
least two to four weeks before travel to ensure ample time for any

If Your Application Is Refused
Occasionally, a visa or ETA application may be refused. While this can be stressful, it usually occurs for a clear reason, such as missing documents or incomplete information.
If your application is refused:
- Read the official letter carefully – it should state the specific reason for refusal.
- Correct any issues (missing documents, unclear details, updated financial evidence, etc.).
- Submit a new application with all corrected and required documentation – but do this well before your intended travel date.
