TUTORS FOR THE JUNIOR PROGRAMME
HOW IS THE PROGRAMME STRUCTURED?
You will be taught by the same expert tutors as on the senior OSS programmes, but their brief will be different. Their aim will be to help you understand more about the great range of courses that are available to you at university and what subjects you should study at school in order to pursue a particular path of study or career goal.
Classes will be more discussion-based and hands-on. Each tutor will introduce you to their field of study, explaining their passion for their research, and the path they have followed to get to where they are. Classroom-based study will take place in the mornings, with afternoons devoted to a range of learning experiences outside the classroom, from museum visits to fieldwork.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
You will be required to write an individual project of approximately 1000-2000 words and there will be guidance classes to help you with this.
As the aim of this will be to encourage soft skills as well as knowledge, students will be encouraged to collaborate on their projects and to give either group or individual presentations on their research at the end of the programme.
Whether worked on as a group or individually, each student will be responsible for submitting their own written essay at the end of the programme which will be assessed by subject experts.
FAQ
The Senior OSS is pitched at first-year undergraduate level and is therefore challenging even for 16-18 year olds. In the Junior OSS we will maintain the stretch-and-challenge approach by exposing the students to experts in their field, but the classes will be more informal and focused on interest development rather than knowledge acquisition.
The Senior OSS structure is based on a full day of lectures and seminars, while in the Junior OSS the mornings will be solidly academic, but the afternoons will provide an opportunity for the students to get out of the classroom, and guided by the student supervisors, they will be set academic and/or personal challenges during visits to museums, wildlife areas etc.
The goal of the Junior OSS programme is to expose younger students to the same inspiring range of highly qualified academic tutors as on our senior programme, but to focus on students gaining insight into what it would be like to study a particular subject at university and what career options would be open to them afterwards. The goal of the OSS Junior project is to encourage exploration, collaboration and presentation skills, rather than finely-honed academic skills.
