Stream D
Law, PPE, and Global Issues Summer Programme in Oxford and Cambridge
This stream will prepare students planning to apply to study law, PPE, philosophy or politics and international relations. Knowledge of philosophy is an excellent basis for the study of law, and for those interested in international law or human rights law, an understanding of global issues is also crucial. This programme will enable you to gain insight, not only into the workings of the law but also into the societal and ethical context within which the law operates. For those wishing to study PPE this programme, together with the option of studying economics alongside students in Stream C covers all the necessary bases. It is also an excellent foundation for the study of politics and international relations more broadly.

STREAM MODULES
Law
Law is a subject that is studied in the UK more or less equally as an undergraduate subject and through a graduate conversion course and our OSS tutors include successful examples of practicing lawyers who qualified by both routes. The OSS law module reflects the wide range of specialisms offered in a career in the law including tort law, criminal law, human rights law, intellectual property rights. It also examines important topics such as ethics, separation of powers and individual rights.
Philosophy
Philosophy is an ancient and highly regarded discipline, an understanding of which is beneficial in many careers. The OSS philosophy module introduces students to a wide range of aspects of philosophy from the ancient philosophy of Plato and Socrates through the application of logic and epistemology (theory of knowledge) to the ethical and philosophical questions raised by the development of AI.
International Relations
The OSS International Relations module focuses on relations between states and the nature and function of interstate alliances. Regular topics include the future of war, the role of NGOs and peace-keepers, as well as strategic alliances such as NATO and BRICS (an alliance of developing nations).
Politics
Politics as studied at top UK universities is not so much about current events as it is about political theory and political structures. The OSS module in politics aims to cover both topics of current interest such as the consequences of the 2024 US presidential election and the future of post-colonial Hong Kong as well as topics such as feminist political theory and the contrasting nature of different political systems including varieties of democracy.

Hi, I’m Begüm. I attended Oxbridge Summer Scholars in August 2024, to Stream C. This two week summer programme has become one of the most fun and interactive times I’ve ever had. I had the opportunity to meet numerous people who were passionate about similar things I was interested in, and I had the chance to meet amazing lecturers that provided us with information about the college application processes in the UK. At the end of the programme, I had many takeaways from the lectures and clearer goals about my future; which made me recommend this programme to some of my friends too!

Tutorials
Oxbridge is renowned for its tutorial system. Small groups of students engage in in-depth discussions with tutors, exploring specific topics and research questions. This interactive approach is replicated in the OSS programme, with tutorial classes limited to six students for focused debate and analysis.

The most common form of interactive teaching in UK universities is the seminar, in which an expert tutor guides a group of students in discussion, based on reading and material delivered in lectures. At OSS, seminars are attended by all the students enrolled in a specific stream, typically around 10-12 students per stream. Seminar discussion is encouraged by pre-reading set by the tutors and by lecture introductions to each class.

Seminars
Lectures
